There is something so magical about the month of December. The air is electric and you feel as if anything is possible! The little ones are antsy, so I decided long ago to give in to it all and make December as fun as possible. This means that we utilize read-alouds as often as we can! Turkey Claus
I was first introduced to this turkey in Turkey Trouble, which I love to read in November. This story is all about the same turkey, except this time instead of saving himself from Thanksgiving dinner, he’s seeking out Santa so he won’t be eaten for Christmas dinner. Of course hilarious antics ensue, and it’s a story just as charming as the previous one.
Reindeer
We bring back a little bit of non-fiction research with reindeer! Most children only know about reindeer because of Rudolph. You know Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer! I have to admit when I was younger I thought that reindeer weren’t real and I’ve had students to think the same thing.
It’s amazing to see their faces when they learn that they are real and that they don’t have a red nose! It’s the perfect unit for December because it definitely has their interest!
How to Catch an Elf
The day our elf arrives through our little wee door is a fun day! When I whip out this book they think that perhaps we’ll be able to catch our class elf too! The storyline shows how children decide to catch the elf because they’re unable to catch Santa. The elf out-smarts them at every turn, but I love having the children to share what they would do to catch the elf!
Click, Clack, Ho! Ho! Ho!
Farmer Brown and his crazy animals on the farm are back in this story where Duck tries to come down the chimney like Santa and he gets stuck! All of the animals try to pitch in and help him get unstuck. If they fail in doing so, it could ruin Christmas!
